3 Small-Cap ETFs to Watch as Russell 2000 Hits Record

The Russell 2000 closed at a new record high Friday amid continued upwards momentum for several market indexes. That index, with its focus on small-caps, could prove an intriguing source of investing opportunities, given the right approach. These three small-cap ETFs offer useful tools to invest in the space amid success for the noted small cap index.

Key Takeaways:

  • The Russell 2000 set a record Friday, hitting 3,068.54.
  • That record speaks to the broader appeal for small-caps, offering value and diversification opportunities away from concentration risk.
  • Small-cap ETFs offer strong options to meet those goals and offer robust performance, as well.

While it dropped Monday, the Russell 2000 has still produced healthy numbers over multiple time frames. The index has returned 21.83% YTD and 15.46% over the last six months. Small-caps have picked up some interest amid significant, top-heavy concentration risk in the market.

Which small-cap ETFs, then, might be worth considering in that landscape? Small-cap ETFs include a variety of styles and approaches that can fit different portfolios. Take, for example, the ALPS Medical Breakthroughs ETF (SBIO)

Small-Cap ETFs to Watch as Russell Sets Record

SBIO charges 50 basis points (bps) to track the S-Network Medical Breakthroughs Index. Falling into ETF Database’s small-caps asset class, the index includes biotech names with one or more drugs in Phase II or III FDA trials. That focus on rising names and innovators in biotech has helped the ETF return 30.65% YTD.

Next, there are ETFs like the VictoryShares Small Cap Free Cash Flow ETF (SFLO). SFLO charges a 49-bps fee to track its own index of 200 small-caps perceived to have strong free cash flows and high growth metrics.

The index’s operators look for firms in 120% of the capitalization of the biggest name in the Russell 2000. Together with that cash flow focus, SFLO has returned 34.7% YTD. The small-caps ETF will see its notable three-year ETF milestone this December.

Finally, the iShares U.S. Small Cap Value Factor ETF (SVAL) can intrigue. SVAL charges a 20-bps fee to track the equally-weighted Russell 2000 Focused Value Select Index. The fund’s index targets 250 small-caps meeting value standards, screening the Russell 2000 for liquidity, leverage, and volatility. Excluding 20% of the least liquid and most leveraged and volatile stocks, the fund has returned 29.2% YTD.

Overall, then, that trio of small-cap ETFs can not only help diversify a portfolio, but also provide strong sources of performance. Whether via screening for free cash or liquidity, or even looking into particular categories of smaller firms, small-cap ETFs have a role to play as the category sets records.
