Estate agency dress codes debated after Lords tie rule change

The House of Lords has voted to make ties optional in the parliamentary chamber, prompting renewed discussion about professional dress codes in the estate agency sector.

Labour peer Lord Davies of Brixton commented during the parliamentary debate that formal business attire is declining in Britain, claiming that estate agents and funeral directors are among the few remaining professions where ties are still commonly worn.

Current industry practice

Many property firms, particularly those operating in the premium market segment, continue to require negotiators to wear two-piece suits as a minimum. Some companies additionally mandate ties for male employees, a practice that raises questions about gendered workplace policies given that female staff typically have broader formal clothing options.

The dress code debate comes at a time when the property sector faces broader operational challenges, with industry professionals seeking to maintain client trust while adapting to changing workplace norms.

Professional standards

Formal attire remains standard practice across multiple sectors beyond estate agency, including legal services, investment banking, upmarket retail, and hospitality. The rationale centres on client perception and professional credibility, particularly during property valuations and viewings where agents aim to establish trust with potential vendors.

The discussion reflects wider changes in professional workplace culture, as businesses balance traditional expectations with evolving standards. While technological developments continue to reshape the property sector, questions of professional presentation remain a consideration for firms seeking to differentiate their services in a competitive market.

The House of Lords dress code change forms part of efforts to modernise the chamber’s image, though its relevance to commercial sectors remains a matter of individual company policy.
